Fenniarail ordered two Siemens Vectron electric locomotives

4 Mar 2026

Fenniarail's customer base in both forest giants and the sawmill industry has increased during the current winter. This year Fenniarail will also start transporting pulp products. The growing need for Finnish export industry, which purchases rail transport, to diversify the railway market is creating demand for private equipment investments.

Fenniarail ordered two Siemens Vectron electric locomotives, which will be delivered in 2027. The company already has three of these Vectrons and six diesel locomotives. Fenniarail CEO Lauri Helke says that new customer relationships and expansion into forest industry product transport made additional investments possible: “The challenging times for the export industry have created a need to critically examine also rail transport and its operating models. As an agile and Finland’s most reliable railway company, this has opened up completely new opportunities for us, which are now being materialized in locomotive procurement.” According to Helke, the locomotive procurement for Finland is actually an event of industrial history: “One locomotive employs five drivers and indirectly many more people in the value chain. The locomotive has a service life of tens of years, so the investment made now is very long-term.”

Fenniarail's Chairman of the Board Petri Lempiäinen says that the expansion of operations is in line with Fenniarail's strategy: "With these locomotives, we have invested over 40 million euros in equipment over 10 years. Our goal is to double our operations and at the same time help the Finnish export industry, for which railway logistics is an essential function."
