Fenniarail locomotives to be named

13 Oct 2025

In honor of Fenniarail's 10th anniversary of operation, we will be naming both our current and new locomotives. Until now, Fenniarail locomotives have been identified by numbers, but in the coming months, each locomotive will receive its own name and an illustrated character on its side. The characters are taken from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala.

The naming of locomotives based on the Kalevala theme has its roots in history, as the first locomotives in Finland were given Kalevala-themed and nationalistic names. In the 1860s, a committee was set up to name the first locomotives on the Finnish railway network, with Elias Lönnrot as a member.

We see the naming of Fenniarail locomotives based on the Kalevala theme as keeping the original idea alive and as a tribute to Finnishness and culture. The characters are traditional, but brought to the present day in a modern way.

In the coming months, we will introduce the new names of the locomotives as well as the images and stories of the characters on our social media channels.

The characters are designed by Franz Design Oy.
